Kotagiri in Nilgiris is a quaint little town situated approximately 25 kms from Ooty. The old British bungalows, slopes filled with tea plants and the forests in the distance appeals to anyone who is a mountain person.
Relatively lesser known than their Nilgiri counterparts, Coonoor and Ooty, it was the first choice of the British officials from the Madras Presidency as a summer retreat. Kotagiri owes it name to the Kotas, a tribe native to the town, who unfortunately moved to the outskirts once the commercialisation gained momentum after the ghat road was built from Mettupalyam to Kotagiri.
Although there are plenty of opportunities for treks around the region, my personal favorite is taking a quiet stroll through the ever winding roads.
At every stop, you have a breathtaking view of the hills. You can get get poetic, contemplative and so lost in the almost romantic landscapes.
If your partner loves the hills too, then this might just be your next destination.
